Equihab is a non-profit charity, serving the horse community in
a wide variety of ways:
Our goal is to reduce or eliminate suffering of equines. We offer
a second chance to horses at risk for neglect, abuse, abandonment,
or slaughter. The horses are rehabilitated and checked out by a
vet before being adopted out. Then the horses are made available
at very affordable fees.
If you witness abuse, neglect, or abandonment,
we are not law enforcement but we have some suggestions for you.
If it's local to us, we don't mind getting directly involved.
We sponsor or put on educational presentations, booths, clinics,
and seminars. We feel an educated horse owner will give the best
care. Need a speaker for your group? Just ask!
Equihab works as a safe retirement home for any Equihab horse at
any time. We do not contribute to the excess horse population because
we always take back any horse we adopted out at any time
and for any reason.
We can't always take on every horse that is offered to us, but
we want to give owners options. Some may be eligible for owner
donation; however, non-emergency horses are taken in only as
space permits. If your horse is ready to be retired, we recommend
you look into retirement farms in your area, since we're not set
up for long-term retirement. (Tip: go to google
and search "retirement horse farm" or "retirement
board" and add your state name) You're also welcome to post
horses in need of good homes to our discussion list, adopt-a-horse.
If you ever find any Equihab horse anywhere but the adoptive home,
we will pay you a reward! We do our best to screen & follow-up
with every horse, but should any of them somehow end up in an auction,
kill pen, newspaper ad, or anywhere else, we put up a
$500 reward.
As part of the "$500 Reward" program and to ensure our
horses' safety, we microchip all the horses. We are happy to share
our chip scanner with you, if you're local. Or we can tell you where
to buy one of your own. We've even sponsored microchipping clinics
in the past to help horse owners get affordable chips/registration
for their horses.
We fund raise to create a euthanasia fund
for owners with a suffering horse who cannot afford euthanasia.
There should be no excuse for letting a dying horse suffer or shipping
a suffering horse to slaughter.
Going the extra mile: we are more that nice people
trying to find horses homes. We give ongoing support to anyone who
asks. We offer a mentor program where a less experienced person
can network with others for advice. Our Board members are so dedicated
to helping others they have hauled others' horses to the vet for
an emergency, helped friends of Equihab horse shop even when the
horse they were looking at was for sale elsewhere, and do free trims
for people who need it.
We're the friendly horse adoption program! Kindness ripples outwards
to other people and then to the horses.
