Welcome to the Equihab Foundation, a 501c(3) not-for-profit horse "re-employment" agency.

1. Good horse gets unlucky with bad owner, no owner (abandoned), or dropped off at wrong auction.

2. Equihab offers a second chance for the horse. We try to intervene as soon as possible, preferring not to wait until a neglect horse is skin and bones.

3. Then the horse is vetted, evaluated, and placed up for adoption to good new home.

We round out our services by giving public & owner education, post-adoption follow-ups,and a support & social network.

Quality horses for adoption

At Equihab we find the best horses, give them rest & rehabilitation, and make them available to you. Each horse is seen by a vet before you adopt and goes through thorough evaluation. You can see what horses we have up available today.

We see all breeds, ages, and sizes. We are located close to the racetracks, livestock horse auctions, and the Amish of Lancaster county. If you're looking for a quiet beginners horse, consider a quarterhorse or ex-Amish Belgian. If you need an athlete, you can find thoroughbreds both recently off-track to mature to 20something in age. Ponies, minis, mixed breeds, arabs, and warmbloods have all been re-homed through our program.

If you don't see what you want today, bookmark this page and check back again soon.

Adopting a horse should be easy, and we work to make it a pleasant process. We do answer questions on the horses before you submit your references!

We don't place the horse with the first person who shows up with a trailer; instead he is shown to several people over the course of 1-2 weeks and the best match is chosen. If you do find one you like, we do ask for references & a site check for the horses' safety, but we'll not keep you waiting a month for an answer.

We don't micro-manage people. Instead we equip adoptive homes with a well matched horse, follow up visits or calls, education, and support. You're free to decide if your horse needs blanketed, should be feed Brand X feed, or should be stalled.

We do adopt out-of-state but only generally within our region: Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Virginia. When multiple people are interested in the same horse, preference will be given to those living near Cecil County, Maryland.

We're not a dealer in so many ways

We operate on a not-for profit basis. This means people can get horses from us for what it cost us (or less!) of getting the horse ready for a new home. Sound horses can be had for $1,500 and under.

Not many dealers will always take their horse back no matter what. Think of it as a free retirement farm when he/she gets older. Or, if you try your best & still have to return him, if you do so within 30 days we will give you a credit for your adoption fee.

We can afford to turn business away: We don't have to "make the sale". The horses stay with us as long as it takes to find them a suitable home. Hopefully you'll stay with us long enough to allow us to find you that perfect horse you're searching for.

The services doesn't end when you get the horse. Are you having trouble finding a better vet? Don't know where to turn for nutrition or saddle fit? Want a second opinion on your farrier's trim? Just let us know

Even if you don't adopt from us, come to one of our meetings or events. You'll make new friends & learn about important horse-related issues.

Dispelling the myths

Horses at a rescue aren't inferior. He could've ended up there merely because of a nasty divorce forcing a quick sale, and that good horse was about to be loaded on a slaughter bound truck.

As people outgrow horses, it raises the question of where those outgrown horses go. Some just don't know how to market the horse, and find themselves unable to sell after months of trying.

Some do have papers. Some were former winning racehorses or show horses. Sometimes it's a wonderful horse with an injury the former owner just didn't (or couldn't) deal with.

Equihav horses are always seen by a vet before being adopted, so you never wonder if the horse might be sick. We encourage you to bring your own vet, farrier, or trainer, too. Horses coming in from any questionable places are put into isolation quarantine, so you don't have the fear of bringing Strangles home unexpectedly.

Remember: ANY horse out there today could end up in a bad situation and turn up at a rescue.

A win-win

When you adopt from Equihab you give that horse a second chance and you free up resources so we're able to pull the next horse from dire circumstances. You get a healthy horse who's up to date on all maintenance, and at a fraction of full retail purchase price.
