Microchips
All Equihab horses are microchipped using a common type of chip. If something happens (natural disaster like a hurricane Katrina, ownership dispute, etc), the microchip will help bring the horse back to us. A microchip is a painless tiny glass-coated chip injected in the left side of the neck. It is harmless, lasts a lifetime, and is extremely hard to remove or destroy. It's a very standard kind of chip, and even a dog/cat vet should be able to read the chip if they have any sort of chip scanner. It's inside a sealed glass capsule, so it's not possible for it to somehow poison the horse, cause cancer, or do any other harm. We do voluntary microchipping. This does not mean we are in favor of the NAIS (proposed federal mandatory livestock ID program). Horses are not meat animals (livestock), which is what the NAIS is designed to track. We also register our horses with AVID HorseTrac (link to external HorseTrac site). Should there be a catastrophe and an authority cannot reach someone at Equihab, the HorseTrac can be contacted by phone or fax to find ownership. We can also notify HorseTrac if one of our horses goes "missing", and HorseTrac will notify relevant slaughterhouses and police. We also own our own scanner, and we're happy to check a horse for you to see if he/she is already chipped (no charge, of course)! And if you scan a horse and find out it might be one of ours, we offer a $500 reward if the horse is recovered from anywhere he is not supposed to be, such as auction, kill pen, broker lot, etc |
