Red's Story:
Sponsors saved this SMALLER Belgian gelding and his teammate
from slaughter, directly in a killer pen in New York state. The
boys had nowhere to go, so Equihab stepped up and took them on.
We were told that "they were used for logging and broke
to ride and drive" and that "the owner just wanted to
trade them in for a bigger set to work." We don't have harnesses
to fit them, so harness evaluation is up to you. We have ground-driven
him. We have saddled both him and his teammate up.
Red goes good under saddle but he wasn't quite as saddle broke
as we thought. We've been working with him. One of our homes has
taken him on and is getting lessons on him, which should help.
He is a good boy but just needs some refinement on speed control.
He does have a nice range of speeds within each gait and he's
not pokey.
Red is well put-together and stocky, so he can carry some weight.
Might make an idea trail horse for a larger rider.
He is good for vet & farrier. No vices. Respects being tied.
Friendly and curious.
Update: Red was taken to a mounted clinic in
late October. Tasks included riding in the indoor and around horses
he did not know while the rider took instruction. The instructor's
comment was that he was one of the calmest horses there that weekend.
Red is getting ridden, but he's clearly a training project. He
does NOT understand leg pressure right now, so he needs a rider
who won't apply lots of leg to get him going... he goes forward
just fine with a cluck & verbal cues.
