Consider Adopting your next horse

Please note: We do not ship horses to people we've never met. How will you know the horse is suitable if you've never met him/her ? We prefer to place horses in the mid-Atlantic states, and preference will be given to those who are within several hours drive of Equihab's office.

We made adopting your next horse easy & convenient:

Step 1: Contact us to let us know your needs, goals, riding style, family members who might ride, boarding/stable situation, etc.

Visit our current adoptable horse list.

We will discuss with you what horse(s) might fit your situation. We're not looking to judge people; we just know the horses' temperaments & needs and it's our job to match the right horse up with the right home.

Step 2: Fill out an Adoption Questionnaire either in writing or you can email us the information. For the protection of the horses, expect us to ask for the following: vet & farrier references, personal references. We also do a farm visit so we can sleep soundly knowing the horse is in safe surroundings.

Step 3: Come and visit the horse(s)! You're welcome to bring along your vet, farrier, or trainer. If it's a horse for your spouse, he/she needs to come along and meet the horse. You must wear your helmet and suitable (no open toed) shoes.

Step 4: If you find a horse you like and it's a good match, all you have to do is fill out an Adoption Contract (PDF format). There is an adoption fee (always well under market sale value) to cover some of the costs of rehabbing and caring for the horse, and it varies based on the horse's age, abilities, and any special needs.

  • You are shown all the horse's records we have, and the vet's findings will be opened to you for your review.
  • Please allow us about a week before we can approve your application. This allows our Board of Directors to review your application, to check references, and to follow up with you if we have any questions.
  • Please expect us to come visit your farm in person.
  • Boarding barns are acceptable.
  • We do not wish to micro-manage how you care for the horse, but it's important he is in a safe & suitable environment.

If there's something in the Adoption Contract you're not clear on or comfortable with, ask us.

Credit cards (via PayPal) are also an option.

Sorry we do not take trade-in horses in place of the adoption fee, i.e. no horse-horse swaps for outside horses.

Step 5: Arrange transport and enjoy!

Step 6: Give us an update when the horse arrives at the barn. We also require annual updates, and we'll call you to schedule a follow-up visit.

If the horse should not work out for any reason, he comes back. It's not in the horse's best interest to be with a home where he's not the perfect match.

We offer a 30 day guarantee. If it absolutely doesn't work out, notify us promptly. If he arrives back at our farm within 30 days of his delivery, we give you a full credit and we'll work with you to find a more suitable horse in our program. Horses coming back after 30 days we cannot give any refunds/credits after the 30 day window has expired. Horses must be returned in the same or better condition as when they left to be eligible for a full credit.

Please understand that horses cannot be taken home to try out. There is just too much of a risk if the horse were to get hurt or fall ill. You are welcome to come visit the horse as many times as you wish with anyone you wish: trainer, family members, friend, vet, farrier, etc. If you're looking for a trail horse, we can take you out on the trails to try him.

Visit our current list of adoptable horses.

Looking for a certain kind of horse? Contact us and/or keep checking back.

The more involved you get with our group, the more we can help you find that perfect horse. Please come to board meetings or drop by our events.
